Living to the beat of your own drum is actually easier said than done. Most believe they are real or “The Realest” but many don’t realize displaying your most authentic self to the world is often a very isolating endeavor. Bohemian Lonely has found a way to alchemize his pain and express his experiences through his art and connect to the world in a way that has fostered a community of nature loving creatives and free spirits.

He describes his music as psychedelic, experimental, deeply rooted in hip-hop, and his own self expression. He’s produced for a couple other artists and been on a journey to find his sound over the years while being influenced by artists like Kendrick Lamar, Ab Soul, Tyler The Creator, Childish Gambino, And Kaytranada.
“I started feeling different about music when I started producing. Bohemian means unconventional, so that’s what I want to go for with my art. I really want to change the stigma of lonely, and show people that you can do your own thing. A name is what you make it.”
He has been writing since he was 14 to process how he was feeling and started trying to match flow, then ended up rapping on instrumentals. When he rapped for his dad he was taken to the studio, and became Bolo when he started dropping music and producing. Rapping about his life, gave him the confidence he needed.

I asked him how he feels being an artist has helped him through his life journey. To which he replies, “It helped me be myself unapologetically. Just because you aren’t an artist or creator doesn’t mean you can’t be yourself. I want that for everyone. Once you’re consistent in whatever you’re doing, you find the beauty in the process.
Another great thing that he is involved in is organizing Camp Bolo. When I asked him what made him create it, he said.
“I was in a leadership camp when I was younger that led me to experience and connect with nature. When you deal with nature, you start to believe you can get through whatever you put your mind to, so I saw the value in it. I wanted to give off a camp vibe with my album and it definitely had a come as you are energy. Now I’m doing it once a month this summer with different people from different walks of life joining and you can feel when we all gather that we really aren’t that different.”

He tells me about how the hike grew more as he kept organizing the events and people never knew what to expect, but made sure to tell him how much it affected them in the end. Between the guided meditation and the sense of community that people feel he says, “We’ve learned that when you slow down, you can stretch time.”

Having this outlet and creating it for others was really important to him. “People need to be open to going outside, being themselves, and not being embarrassed by what others might think of them. Dealing with your mental health should be at the front of your mind and there’s so much life to live.”
I find so much beauty in what he’s doing with Camp Bolo and the level of introspection you can find on songs like Twilight Zone, Meet and Greet, and Hollywood on his new album. The road to this project has been a long one, but he appreciates the journey all the same. In the midst of grieving a friend that played a large part in his life, balancing school, looking for the right engineers, and finding himself, he learned that there’s never the perfect time to do hard things, but you should always do them anyway.
“You live on your own timeline, so you shouldn’t worry too much. Everything is connected but separate and everything happens for a reason.”
