Heart of a raven

Raven “Hulk” Saunders has been a professional in their sport of shot put for eight years and when asked the question (When you create art, what feelings do you hope to convey and what or who influences you?) they expressed, “I take bits and pieces from many different sources, and am inspired by people who transcend greatness.”

I was left in awe by their response, as I was by many responses that they had over the course of our interview. We spoke for what I realize was three hours, but felt like 30 minutes. We could’ve carried a conversation for longer, because I was so amazed by them and their profound feelings of many different subjects alongside their ability to highlight the essence of what it is to be more than the standard of what a woman is taught to be, or told to be in America.

To break the mold in not only sexuality, outspokenness, and image, they are to put it in the simplest terms a trailblazer.

They are one of the only three Olympic Medalist from @teamusa in the Women’s shot put category, we want to cite for naysayers or anyone that wants to diminish their hard earned accomplishments.

Celebrating women’s history month with a beautiful feature on a beautiful soul. We would like to introduce you all to three time Olympian, 2020 Olympic silver medalist, queer rights activist, mental health advocate, and all around history maker and boundary breaker, introducing the amazing @givemelshot_

Their fearlessness cannot only be displayed in their fun spirited celebrations on the field, but also translates over to their music, and how they choose to express themself through that medium as well. They see their song “Amber” (unreleased) as an expression of passion, beauty, and duality. It also showcases the many sides of athletes that we might not be shown “off the court” or field in their case outside of their high level achievements. This helps me pose to you, the audience the question, “What does your heart and soul want to express that your body does not?”

“Your craft is your own…” Raven says, “Cast a wide net, and demand your royalties instead of just flattery.”

Throughout our conversation, one principle rings loudly. Raven has a firm belief that the accolades they acquire, are for ALL PEOPLE. Despite their being met with crude disagreements of how they present themself in the world and their behavior they remind me that they are a great example of what freedom looks like, and their mere existence is an homage to their ancestor’s power. “I am living out their wildest dreams.” Raven states.

Raven twerking after their final throw at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and their symbol of protest (slide 2) are a few examples to date of them using their platform fearlessly to shed light upon those who do not have a voice, have been stripped of, or do not share their visibility in media.

“The intersection of where all people who are oppressed meet.” They described the symbol.

They serve as a great every day inspiration of what being black, gay, non-binary, and strong is in our current day and climate.
